On The Road To The WineCup Gamble Ranch (Part 1)

As I made my way toward the Winecup Gamble Ranch in eastern Nevada I stopped alongside the road to capture what I thought were going to be some distant lightning strikes. Five minutes later this storm was completely over my head and the surrounding areas. In that 5 minutes I had to wrenching a new adjustable filter I've never used before and shoot Kentucky windage style as the rain was approaching quickly. Never shooting lightning in my life I was to capture this shot luckily. Soon after, with my adrenaline pumping from the lightning strikes so close to me, I had to escape to my truck as I was getting drenched quickly. Definitely worth it though. Such an amazing sight to watch a powerful storm slowly move through the valley above me. Really makes one think.

Little General store off Hwy 80 somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

After crashing in a Mcdonald's parking lot the night before I drove for about another hour and finally arrived in Montello, Nv. As you can see there's really not much out here so I had to make due with what the town provided me.

Country Roads Baptist Church south of Montello, Nv.

Main freight line runs through Montello (background) at all hours of the day and night. Montello first started as a freight town for railroad workers to rest and build more lines around the area.

The only bar in town. Arrived here at 9am and decided it was best to grab a beer or two and meet some locals. I must say, the ones I spoke with were some of the kindest, most welcoming people I have ever met. Stories for days too!

Barbara-Owner of the Cowboy Bar Cafe. I sat with her for a while and inquired about the this little town. Asked what brought people here, "It’s Live and let live in Montello. They can live how they want. That’s why they come here. To get away from the life they had somewhere else. They're left alone here and can live peacefully.”

Jay Adams-A resident of Montello who has lived here for 12 years now sat and spoke with me. Much of it was about demographics of the town. At one point I walked outside and saw an old Army uniform in his truck still hanging up. Our conversation quickly went from the town to our old glory days in the military and how shitty the VA is. Jay served with the 6th Cavalry Regiment during Vietnam. He spoke to me about the difference of training the Army and Marines had. "Marines were well trained for that precision job they had where the Army had general knowledge over different fields. The Army went through soldiers like Shit through a tin horn." Concerning the VA, Jay told me that "The VA will spend 1 million to not pay you a dime." Seems pretty accurate to me.

Jay Adams-Sergeant in the 6th Cavalry Regiment.

Jay may not have much but he still takes pride in his uniform and time served.

Jay's little buddy.

Upward and onward after a few beers and nice buzz. Think I can manage the 5 miles up the dirt road to the ranch......TBC
